A new study has laid bare a stark reality for global agriculture: approximately 46% of the world’s farmers and farm workers are poisoned by pesticides every year. This translates to an estimated 402-433 million cases of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning annually, a scale that Jayakumar Chelaton, executive director of Pesticide Action Network India, rightly declares a “crisis that can no longer be ignored.” The research, commissioned by Pesticide Action Network and published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, draws on publicly available data from 2006-2023, painting a grim picture of unchecked chemical reliance.

India accounts for nearly 60% of these fatalities, underscoring a concentrated burden in key agricultural economies. Geographically, the greatest estimated number of poisonings was identified in southern Asia, followed by south-east Asia, and significantly for the African continent, east Africa. The highest national incidence rate, a shocking 84% of farmers and farm workers, was reported in Burkina Faso in west Africa, revealing the profound vulnerability of agricultural communities in these regions.


The implications of these findings extend far beyond individual health. Despite global efforts to highlight the dangers, pesticide use has continued its upward trajectory, doubling since 1990 to reach 3.8 million tonnes in 2023. This unchecked growth signals a systemic failure to protect a foundational workforce, absorbing the costs of agricultural output in human suffering. The call for “immediate action” from the study's authors, including the implementation of a UN recommendation to phase out highly hazardous pesticides, is not merely a public health plea but an economic imperative. The study's defined scope, focusing solely on acute poisoning and excluding the estimated 84 million children working in agriculture or long-term health impacts, suggests the true scale of the problem is considerably larger. The growing evidence linking pesticide exposure to the development of Parkinson’s disease, now recognized as an occupational disease in European nations like France, Germany, and Italy, further complicates the long-term health and economic calculus.


For African markets, particularly in East Africa where significant agricultural activity underpins economies, these findings are a stark warning. The high incidence rates in regions like East Africa and Burkina Faso demonstrate that the continent's agricultural workforce is disproportionately exposed to these risks. This exposure has direct consequences for national development, public health systems, and the long-term viability of food production. The continued reliance on hazardous pesticides, despite their known impact, points to a pressing need for innovation in agricultural practices, robust policy interventions, and better mechanisms for disseminating information on safer alternatives.


The “crisis that can no longer be ignored” is a multilateral challenge demanding more than just recommendations. It requires a fundamental reassessment of global agricultural supply chains, a re-evaluation of the economics that permit such widespread harm, and a concerted effort to support farmers in transitioning to practices that prioritize human health alongside crop yield. The data compels us to acknowledge the hidden human cost embedded in our food systems, particularly for those in developing economies.
