For nearly two centuries, the West enjoyed consistent generational progress, with each cohort surpassing the last in health, happiness, and education. Despite increased time spent in schools, IQ scores began to fall across Western nations, a decline mirrored in international test scores. The widespread adoption of laptops in US schools accelerated between 2010 and 2012, before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a rapid, albeit necessary, pivot to digital learning. What began as a “Band-Aid” measure during Covid, however, largely became permanent, with 88% of US school districts now operating with one-to-one computers.
Horvath's conclusion, drawn from over 15 years of studying how people learn, is unequivocal: “tech is not a very good tool for it.” He buttresses his argument with data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), which tracks the academic performance of 15-year-olds globally. Analysis of Pisa scores from 2012, 2015, and 2018 revealed a direct correlation: “The more time students spent on screens at school, the further their scores fell.” Critically, students who used computers for over six hours per day scored an average of 66 points lower than their peers who abstained entirely.
This data signals a profound economic and societal challenge. A $400 billion industry, built on the promise of enhanced learning, may in fact be facilitating cognitive decline.
