For centuries, the camel has been the bedrock of livelihoods in Africa’s arid and semi-arid regions, a living symbol of resilience against the continent's most brutal conditions. Famed as the 'ships of the desert,' these dromedary giants, which comprise 80% of the world's population in North Africa and the Horn of Africa, have traditionally offered a buffer against drought and extreme heat. In the Afar region of north-eastern Ethiopia, one of the hottest places on Earth, camel herder Ali Umer, who owns approximately 500 camels, articulates a crisis that transcends anecdotal observation. He describes his camels suffering from "blisters on their feet," "watery eyes," and "hot sand burns their skin and eats up their hair when they are sitting." More alarmingly, Umer reported losing eight camel calves within just one month due to the escalating intensity of the heat, noting that even the wind now carries heat instead of cool air. His firsthand accounts are corroborated by scientists and animal welfare workers, who point to stress, fatigue, dehydration, and increased disease prevalence as direct impacts.


The economic and social ramifications are profound. A study based on herder perceptions in southern Ethiopia, slated for publication in 2025, reveals a detrimental impact of high temperatures and climate variability on camel herd health, productivity, and reproductive performance. The situation is particularly dire in Somalia, where research published in June highlights widespread drought-related camel mortality, affecting nearly 46% of camel-owning households. In the northern regions, the crisis is acutely concentrated, with Sool reporting a staggering mortality rate of nearly 73% among camel herds.


This widespread mortality isn't merely an environmental footnote; it's a direct assault on the economic viability of pastoralism in these regions. The increased frequency and intensity of droughts, fueled by extreme heat turning water from soil and bodies into vapor, means that the very foundation of herder wealth and food security is eroding. While inadequate veterinary services and animal management are acknowledged as contributing factors, experts unequivocally identify extreme heat as the primary driver behind the 2021-22 drought and its devastating consequences. The shift by farmers and cattle herders to camels over the years, specifically for their resilience, now appears to be a strategy buckling under unprecedented climatic pressures.


The implications extend beyond individual households. As the foundational 'ships of the desert' begin to falter, the traditional coping mechanisms of entire communities in the Horn of Africa and North Africa are being overwhelmed. The sustained loss of such critical livestock assets signifies a broader vulnerability across regions historically dependent on pastoral economies. This isn't just about animal welfare; it's about the erosion of a socio-economic backbone, signaling a critical need for new adaptive strategies as climate change redefines the limits of even the hardiest species.


The data is unequivocal: the 'ships of the desert' are no longer impervious. The escalating severity of climate variability, pushing temperatures consistently above 50°C in areas like the Danakil Depression, signals a systemic crisis for traditional pastoral livelihoods. What was once considered ultimate resilience is now a casualty, forcing a stark re-evaluation of human-animal interaction and economic sustainability in Africa's most challenging environments.
