Former US President Donald Trump has dismissed dire warnings from artificial intelligence experts, casting a stark light on the intensifying global race for tech supremacy. During a visit to Ireland, Trump asserted, “You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn't be bringing it up and they're bringing up things that won't happen,” directly challenging expert consensus on AI's potential for catastrophic outcomes. His primary concern, he made clear, was maintaining American leadership: “We're leading China on AI... and, frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.”
This presidential dismissal comes after a chorus of alarming statements from inside the AI development community. A former Anthropic researcher warned of a “strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future” if the current pace of development continues unchecked. Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher who recently quit Anthropic after stints at OpenAI, conveyed to the BBC that staff developing these systems are “genuinely frightened” for humanity's future.
