The escalating crisis of waterborne illnesses across Britain and the US is carving out a burgeoning market for rapid testing technologies, as evidenced by the dramatic uptake of Molendotech’s solutions. With campaign groups like Surfers Against Sewage logging 164 reports of sickness this year, largely gastroenteritis, the conventional, multi-day laboratory testing model is proving inadequate in a public health emergency demanding immediate insights.


Molendotech, a spinout from the University of Plymouth, is at the forefront of this shift. The company, founded in 2018 by Professor Simon Jackson, developed Bactiquick, a portable test kit designed to detect harmful gram-negative bacteria such as E coli, Pseudomonas, Legionella, and salmonella on the spot. This device, launched in May 2025, offers a stark contrast to traditional methods by providing results in real-time, looking for endotoxins rather than requiring days for bacterial cultures to grow and be counted in a lab.


The market response to this immediacy has been compelling. Molendotech reported a peak sales revenue of £94,000 in May, marking a nearly 30-fold increase from the “few thousand pounds a month” recorded in mid-2025. This rapid growth underscores a critical demand, driven by both public health concerns and the practical utility of a device costing £300, with individual test samples priced at approximately £25. The company’s expansion into the US, with a distributor near the Great Lakes, further indicates a widespread need for accessible, on-demand water quality monitoring.


The strategic value of this technology extends beyond immediate detection. Molendotech is developing an app set for launch in the UK and US in October. This application will collate data from daily water tests, integrating it with rain and tidal flow information. Crucially, it will leverage artificial intelligence to create predictive models, offering a forward-looking dimension to water safety that moves beyond reactive measurements. This blend of real-time data and predictive analytics represents a significant leap from traditional spot-testing, enabling proactive risk assessment and potentially influencing policy responses to pollution incidents.


The urgency for such innovation is highlighted by explicit calls for governments to "step up water testing" in the wake of numerous sewage spills and contamination events. Professor Jackson himself noted that "Rivers are probably worse in the UK than in Europe," painting a grim picture of the current environmental state. Technologies like Molendotech’s, which produce a smartphone-linked traffic light system to indicate bacteria levels against UK and EU water quality thresholds, empower not just authorities but also individuals and groups to repeatedly monitor water quality, fostering a more transparent and accountable approach to environmental health.


Molendotech’s trajectory signals a broader industry shift towards decentralized, immediate environmental monitoring solutions. The success of Bactiquick, born from a personal experience of illness after swimming, resonates with a public increasingly concerned about the health impacts of water pollution. This commercial momentum, fueled by a clear and present public health challenge, positions real-time, AI-driven diagnostics as an indispensable tool in the ongoing battle for clean water and robust public health infrastructure.
