A stark warning has been issued by space industry experts and environmental groups: the proposed space datacenters from tech giants like SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin threaten “catastrophic” environmental destruction. These claims are at the heart of a new US petition demanding a thorough review of plans that could fundamentally alter Earth’s atmosphere.
The core issue revolves around proposals for millions of “orbital datacenters,” which are currently pressing for Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval. Experts, including Steve Volz, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) satellite office, highlight the significant environmental risk of putting millions of additional satellites into orbit.
