Apple’s highly anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market, the iPhone Duo, has hit an early snag, with owners globally reporting cracks in the device’s screen. Barely days after its general sale launch on Friday, a product touted as the most high-profile under new CEO John Ternus—who took the helm from Tim Cook in September—is facing scrutiny over its inner display integrity.

Reports, initially surfacing on Reddit and various social media platforms, detail instances of the costly $1,999 (Ā£1,499) handset developing display malfunctions. Apple has confirmed an issue affecting the ā€œinner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,ā€ advising users to contact AppleCare for replacements. This acknowledgment comes amidst anecdotes such as an Australian user’s account of their Duo cracking along the internal hinge within six hours of ownership, accompanied by an ā€œaudible crackā€ and a visible white strip of light on the screen. Similar reports have emerged from the US and India, as highlighted by Bloomberg news service, with Apple indicating that affected units tend to show defects quickly after initial use.

Despite these early reliability concerns, market reception for the iPhone Duo has been described by Apple as ā€œincredibly positive,ā€ with demand being ā€œnothing short of extraordinary.ā€ The device has reportedly sold out, with the next round of shipments not expected until January, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, a publication linked to Foxconn, Apple's primary manufacturer. This dichotomy—high demand meeting early defect reports—presents an immediate challenge to Apple's brand reputation for premium quality.

Francisco Jeronimo, vice-president of data and analytics at IDC, a tech research company, cautions against premature conclusions regarding the significance of the screen issue, noting that such glitches are ā€œquite common when a new product comes to market.ā€ Jeronimo draws parallels to Samsung’s experience with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, underscoring that the critical factor is a company’s response. Apple's immediate directive for customers to seek replacements is a ā€œright first step,ā€ according to Jeronimo, aimed at containing potential brand damage.

This incident underscores the inherent complexities and material science challenges of foldable technology, even for a titan like Apple. The rapid iteration required for competitive innovation in this segment appears to be testing established quality control paradigms. While the swift replacement policy might mitigate immediate customer dissatisfaction, the long-term perception of the iPhone Duo, and indeed Apple’s broader foray into nascent form factors, will hinge on how effectively and transparently it addresses these initial faults. The situation is a stark reminder that even with extraordinary demand and a high-profile launch, the foundational promise of product reliability remains paramount for consumer trust in the premium segment.
